The Bronze Age and the Greeks

Interactive History School Visits, Workshops and Learning Activities

Let us bring the WOW factor into your classrooms with our fun and informative Bronze Age learning days.  This is a fascinating period where the first metals were discovered and used throughout Europe.  We can bring this to life with our interactive workshops throughout the day.

We love working with primary and secondary schools across Sussex, Surrey and Kent on their Ks1, Ks2 and Ks3 history curriculum topics.

The Bronze Age

The Bronze Age is that period from 3200 to 600 BC when the first metals were discovered and worked into tools and weapons.  By mixing copper and tin at high temperatures when they are in a liquid state two soft metals combine to make a much stronger and harder alloy – bronze.  The society that we know most about from these times is that of The Greeks from Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey and the Siege of Troy.

"Thank you for your awesome fact filling day"

Artefacts Created for Workshops

For our Bronze Age school visits we have researched and recreated the following artefacts for use during your day:

  • Full set of Bronze Age Hoplite armour as would have be worn by a noble Greek warrior at the Siege of Troy
  • The weapons he would have carried in to battle, his sword, axe, spear and dagger and his shield for protection
  • Samples of copper, tin and bronze and the other raw materials such as boiled leather that would have been used for making his armour and weapons
  • A full set of fur-on skins and skulls to represent the animals the warriors would have hunted in their free time including bear, wolf, European bison and elk, fox, badger, otter, beaver, lynx and roe and red deer
  • The clothing, jewellery and everyday items that the warrior and his family would wear and use at home
  • The tools and chains of a slave working for the Greek family
  • A saddle corn quern for grinding down grain into flour
  • A friction fire lighting kit to make fire the prehistoric way

Activities Agenda

During a Bronze Age history workshop your class will:

  • Roll out our very long timeline tape to show just how long ago the Bronze Age was and look at our painted-on leather maps to demonstrate how the use of Bronze spread from the Middle East in to Southern Europe and then over time eventually to Northern Europe and Britain.
  • See teachers dressed as a noble Hoplite warrior in his full armour and a poor archer in his simple armour made from leather.
  • Go outside for a fire lighting demonstration and to witness how high and far a Bronze Age bow can shoot.
  • Imagine what life would be like training as a warrior and using hunting as a way to train for war as well as supply meat to feed the army.  We can illustrate this with the wide range of reproductions of the equipment that we have made in exactly the same way our ancestors did.
  • Try on the helmets, breastplates and hold the shields, swords and spears we have made to fit them.
  • Enjoy a handling session with the animal furs of everything from a European bison to a bear, wolf and roe deer. A fun quiz where your students try to match 5 furs and 5 skulls with 5 pictures of different animals follows.
  • Everyone can have a turn on the saddle corn quern to get a feel for what hard work it is to mill flour. All part of life's ‘daily grind'!
  • Visit the Greek doctor and learn how he would use a urine sample to work out what was wrong with you and have a smell at some of his very special medicines that he will treat his patient (your teacher!) with.
  • Take part in a question and answer session to finish the visit and reinforce the day's learning. -
