Communication Through the Ages for Events

Hands on History has developed a display for the Victorian era and we are working on a range of 'Have a Go' activities based on how radically communication over distance changed from the beginning of the Industrial Revolution to the end of the 19th century.

Our 'Hands On' activities will involve all ages trying to send messages from camp to camp. Starting with using flags for semaphore and then sunlight for sending messages by heliograph. Then, with the discovery of electricity, the introduction of Morse code and the telegraph system. Finishing with the development of early telephones.
